Military and Staff Sargent Giunta Essay

Military and Staff Sargent Giunta Essay Military and Staff Sargent Giunta Essay Honor, Duty and Respect There are very few men who are awarded the Medal of Honor; more than that however are still alive to tell their story. Staff Sargent Giunta displayed actions of honor, duty, and respect on several occasions during the night of the attack on himself and his fellow soldiers. He presented honor to his superior’s by doing what he had been trained to do in the situation. His duty was to protect his comrades and without hesitation and he did so. Staff Sargent Giunta showed respect because he said that all of the other Medal of Honor recipients before him were all actual heroes. He specifically said that he wasn’t doing anything that one of his other buddies wouldn’t have done. Honor. As a very patriotic American citizen honor means a lot to me because if the public doesn’t have honor towards its country then the country means nothing. After listing and reading about Staff Sargent Giunta his honor towards his country was exactly what the military of the United States should want out of a soldier in my eyes. He humbled himself to save a comrade and then didn’t expect anything in return. Honor is what other people did before you that created a higher standard of living. Having honor as one of your personal characteristics is living day to day with those higher standards because you believe in the men and women that came before you. Duty is an act of service in the military or living life by a moral code. I believe that a soldier’s duty is instilled inside of them throughout their years of service. Staff Sargent and the men that fought next to him knew their duty as soldiers. You could tell this because it didn’t take long for the men to register what was going on the men immediately got into position and returned fire. From the videos and reading material about Staff Sargent Giunta actions there is no way

Where Immigrants Can Find Free English Classes

Where Immigrants Can Find Free English Classes Language barriers are still among the most formidable obstacles for immigrants coming to the United States, and English can be a difficult language for new arrivals to learn. Many immigrants are ready and willing to learn, even if just to improve their fluency in English. Nationally, the demand for English as a second language (ESL) classes have consistently exceeded supply. Classes on the Internet The internet has made it convenient for immigrants to learn the language from their homes. Online youll find sites with English tutorials, tips, and exercises that are an invaluable resource for beginning and intermediate speakers. Free online English classes such as USA Learns allow immigrants to learn with a teacher or independently and prepare for citizenship tests. Free online ESL courses for both adults and children are invaluable for those who cannot get to classrooms due to schedules, transportation issues, or other barriers. To partake in free online ESL classes, learners need fast broadband internet, speakers or headphones, and a sound card. Courses offer skills activities in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Many courses will teach life skills that are so important to succeed at work and in a new community, and instructional materials are almost always online. Colleges and Schools Immigrants with beginner, intermediate or high intermediate English-language skills seeking free English classes and looking for more structured learning should check with community colleges in their areas. There are over 1,200 community and junior college campuses scattered across the United States, and the overwhelming majority of them offer ESL classes. Perhaps the most attractive advantage of community colleges is cost, which is 20% to 80% less expensive than four-year universities. Many also offer ESL programs in the evenings to accommodate immigrants work schedules. ESL courses in college serve also to help immigrants better understand American culture, improve employment opportunities, and participate in their childrens educations. Immigrants seeking free English classes can also contact their local public school districts. Many high schools have ESL classes in which students get to watch videos, engage in language games, and get real practice watching and hearing others speak English. There might be a small fee at some schools, but the opportunity to practice and improve fluency in a classroom setting is invaluable. Labor, Career and Resource Centers Free English classes for immigrants run by nonprofit groups, sometimes in partnership with local government agencies, may be found at local labor, career, and resource centers. One of the best examples of these is the El Sol Neighborhood Resource Center in Jupiter, Fla., which offers English classes three nights a week, primarily to immigrants from Central America. Many resource centers also teach computer classes that enable students to continue their language studies on the internet. Resource centers tend to encourage a relaxed environment for learning, offer parenting skills workshops and citizenship classes, counseling and perhaps legal aid, and co-workers and spouses can schedule classes together to support one another.

International Trade and Tariff Essay Example for Free

International Trade and Tariff Essay Tariffs Explain the various impacts of an import tariff in small nations vs. large nations. The impact of an import tariff in a small nation is entirely unlike then an import tariff from a larger nation. When smaller nations imposes a tariff, it does not affect world prices, however the price of the importable commodity will start to rise, usually by the amount of the tariff for manufacturers and trade in the small nation. When large nations impose a tariff, it will reduce the volume of trade. Large nation tariffs also improve terms of the nation’s trade. Since the volume of trade is being reduced, it tends to lesson the nation’s welfare. However it also can improve the nation’s welfare. It depends on the welfare of the nation to if it actually rises or falls depending on the two conflicting forces. What are the three main reasons governments prefer using a tariff to restrict imports versus quotas? A few reasons why tariffs are better option than import quotas is because, tariffs can generate revenue for the Government, import quotas can lead to administrative corruption, and import quotas can cause smuggling. The reason the government can make money off of tariffs is because there can be a percentage put on imported goods that will generate extra money. There are millions of different things that are imported into a country and the small percentage of tariffs generates a lot of revenue that would be lost of the government unless their trade had an authorizing fee on goods being imported. This can lead to administrative corruption, if there are no restrictions on importing goods then the government has the ability to pick and choose who can import and who cannot. This can give the custom officials a lot of power since they would have the ability to favor and only allow certain corporations. Tariff system helps to rid the possibility of corruptions. This not just the price, but also the quantity sold through supply and demand. Smuggling can occur with an import quota when there are large shortages. A tariff cannot provide a set number on the goods or products that are coming into the country so the number of imports will increase when the demand for it goes up. Should our government use a weak dollar exchange rate policy to make imports more expensive in order to help our exporters? The weakening of the U. S. dollar means that the dollar has fallen in value compared other currency. The weak dollar is good for exports, but not good for importers. The value of currency will decrease when the demand for that specific currency is low, which will make importing goods more expensive. A weak dollar can make things difficult for exporters that are selling to the United States. If a foreign company wants to sell goods to the U. S. it either needs to up the price of the product or sell it at a lower price because of the exchange rate. What roles do the IMF and WTO play in trade and the use of tariffs? The IMF or International Monetary Fun is an global business of countries that strives to guarantee the constancy of the worldwide financial and economic system. The IMF tries to make sure that there is balanced growth to international trade, it promotes exchange constancy and helps to give countries a way to balance payment issues. Tariff rate data comes from the IMF database and the country’s authority figures. The WTO or World Trade Organization is a global company that works on the rules of trade between two countries. It helps to ensure that international trade moves smoothly and generously. It also gives countries a helpful and just outlet for dealing with arguments over importing issues. The WTO regulations permit a nation to defend certain businesses if the elimination of tariffs would have detrimental side effects, such as the loss of necessary national trade.

Somewhere Under my Rainbow :: essays papers

Somewhere Under my Rainbow When you are little, the whole world feels like a big playground. Your dreams are big and your hopes are always high. When you are little, your biggest worry is who will get the big swing at recess. As a child I had a very vivid imagination and a best friend whose imagination was even livelier than mine. I was living in Conyers, Georgia the summer it all happened. I was a second grader, but my best friend Stephanie was only in the first grade. Both of our parents were at work and had left my older sister, Kim, in charge of us. She was sixteen years old with a haughty attitude. Most of the time she let us go our own way, while she talked on the phone and groomed herself. Today was no different than any other day that she had kept us. We left the house around 3:00pm and hadn’t been back since. Sweat poured down our foreheads as we sat on Stephanie’s front lawn. Stephanie was a plain girl with long stringy blond hair, the shade of honey mustard and brown eyes whom faded into the sun. Although her looks didn’t show it, she had a spark about her. She had a spark that most kids, at the age of seven, didn’t have. â€Å"So , what can we do? It’s hot but neither of us have a pool. There isn’t a kid within three blocks of here, and I’m bored!† she exclaimed, with am agitated look upon her face. â€Å"I don’t know, but it sure is hot. Hey! Let’s go in your basement and see what’s in there. I promise to go first!† I told her. If there were anything in the world Stephanie feared more than hell, it was her basement. She had feared it since she was tall enough to see down the dark and empty staircase. She had never been down there, but the thought of it’s contents drove her wild. â€Å"Okay but only on my terms. First of all, you go first. And we are only going for a minute. Oh, and one more thing, if I get scared, I’m coming back up. Okay?† she told me. I agreed to her terms and we headed into her house.

The Importance of Family

For most people, family are the people that are always reliable and trustworthy. Friends can come and go but family is always there. For this reason you should never turn your back on family. Loyalty within a family is crucial for the emotional stability of each individual. They provide support, guidance, which is important for everyone. In Drew Hayden Tailor's Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth the characters struggle with family loyalty and values. Support from family members Is very important and can have very negative effects when It Is absent.People often rely on support from family when In troubling circumstances or situations. It can be comforting to have help from family when it is needed so it is beneficial to have a loyal and reliable family to count on or help. In the play Barb says, When Dad died, I held the family together. When Paul died, I held the family together. I'm used to this now. † (Taylor, page 34. ) Barb supported her family during troubling times e ven when her mother, who should have played this role couldn't. Her willingness to help her family Is something everyone should have.Giving support to family members instead of keeping to her emotions sustained the family dynamic. With her support she helped the individuals in her family feel more secure after the loss of a loved one. This same idea connects with the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In the book the main character, Catkins is very supportive with her family. Like Barb, Catkins has to support her family after the loss of a loved one because her mother loses the motivation to even take care of herself after her husband dies.Catkins assumes the role and takes care of both her mother and her little sister _ Supporting her family is essential to Catkins because without each other they have nothing. Catkins also supports her friend Gale who she considers family, by hunting to help feed both his family and hers. He does the same for her when she is sent to the Hung er Games. This shows the dependence people have on their families. Nobody wants to go through life alone. Guidance from family Is essential in shaping character and development of the children.Without family, people will have no one o gulled them through childhood and assist with decisions through adulthood. The role of parents and sibling can have a huge impact on the development off child. If one member breaks their commitment to family values, the next generation may lack the optimal environment to grow up in. The play successfully portrays how people can differentiate depending on how they are raised and by whom. Barb's sister Janice was raised by a different family and therefore has values and beliefs than Barb even though they are sisters.Barb tells Janice, † Back In Otter Lake, If embosomed not home, we wait inside† (Taylor, 28). This quote shows an example of a difference in social customs between the two because of where they were raised. Although the quote does n't show why guidance is essential, it does show how guidance can shape whom someone is regardless of where they were born. With that In mind one can imagine what it would be like for someone without a family to provide guidance. People should stay true to their family because everybody relies guidance is important is very prevalent in the real world. There are many studies written on the subject including one by Grace Keener. She says guidance plays a huge developmental role in self-confidence, learning from mistakes, and optimism. Imagine someone who lacked those three things. Guidance from family is key for the well being of a person. This is why you cannot turn your back on your family, they rely on you and you rely on them. Staying loyal to family is of most importance because a good family dynamic is required for healthy development as well as physical and emotional security. They provide support and assistance when you need it. Barb Helps her family deal with the emotional stre ss of the death of her brother and father. Families give guidance to each other throughout their lives, which shapes whom they are. Janice and Barb's difference in culture and beliefs comes from their different families. Family is what brings us together, makes who we are, and what gets us through life. Being disloyal to ones family is like being disloyal to one's self so family should be the one thing that is always held true to.

Explain Concepts

Explaining Concepts Concepts of Dating According to the article Dating, by Beth L. Bailey. We know dating is a new style of courtship, which was started in the early twentieth. With the emergence of this new style of courtship, the old one was replaced. What I remembered as an example of good explanatory writing is the writer using time order to tell the history of old courtship and when the new system of dating was emerging. And the readers probably are young people they don’t know how the old courtship worked, then the authors cited many resources for comparing and contrast how women lead the old style courtship and after the dating system was created, men have more initiative in the dating. By describing the changing of American courtship to explanatory the concept of dating. One example of effective explanatory part I remember is the â€Å"feminine† power, young women and young men cannot stay alone in public, and one older woman called chaperonage would create a bala nce of power and control the old dating system and the chaperonage could indicate to the man that his attention were unwelcome. Probably like the movie Titanic every time Rose and her fiance Cal have dinner together her mom always seat between them, and them never stay alone.Courtship took place within the girl’s home- in women â€Å"sphere† or at entertainments largely devised and presided over by women. After the mid-1910 on dating, young couples would go to theater, dance or restaurant has more freedom and possibility. After the dating system was created, men have more power in the courtship, not simply because dating took place in the public sphere, but because dating moved courtship into the world of the economy. Money– men’s money—was the center of the dating. Different classes men may choose the different sphere for date.Movie Titanic still is a good example, Rose and her fiance were living in first class, her fiance gave Rose a diamond neck lace— The Heart of Ocean, this is how rich people dating. When Rose and Jack backed to the steerage, they had drunk beer and dance with other people. This part shows how worker-class dating. In the new dating system men can decide where they can date based on their income. In this article, the author using more cited from the newspapers and magazines to support his describe the dating system improve and the history of courtship tell readers the concept of dating.

Writing Tighter How to Cut Your Writing Down to Size

Writing Tighter How to Cut Your Writing Down to Size â€Å"I apologize for writing such a long letter. I didn’t have time to write a short one.† – Mark Twain It’s debatable what the actual quote is and whether it is actually Mark Twain’s, but either way it’s a great statement of the truth. It does indeed take longer - much longer - to write a short letter, blog post, essay, resume, etc. than it does to write a long one. I have frequently taken two-page resumes and cut them down to one without loss of content. Five-page single-spaced personal statements reduce to 500 words. Remarkable right? An example: I worked with a social media marketing expert to create the â€Å"perfect† blog post for LinkedIn. The original draft was 5,504 characters long - 1,777 characters over the LinkedIn limit! In 15 minutes, we had edited the blog down to size. How did we do it? Here are some tips to help you make the grade: Look for anything that could be characterized as â€Å"window dressing.† That’s the stuff you write around the important points! Find the nugget and stick to it! Are you repeating yourself? Stop! Once is enough. We get it. Stay organized. Often the source of rambling language is simply lack of organization and focus. Ask yourself about each and every sentence: How many words can I remove from this sentence and retain its meaning? Go ahead†¦ remove those extra words! You can do it! (Yes, there are extra words in that last sentence. Can you find them?) If you’re really in a bind, remove or reduce the space between bullet points or paragraphs. Only take this drastic measure as a last resort. White space is a prized commodity, especially in a blog or resume! If you remove something and your message no longer transmits, put it back in! Theres always somewhere else you can cut out. The process takes time, but it’s worth it. Your newly trimmed writing will be snappy, punchy and geared to today’s short attention spans! If you are reading this sentence, I’ve followed my own advice.

11 Pieces of Career Advice No One Tells You

11 Pieces of Career Advice No One Tells You Most people have decent jobs. They get up in the morning, grind out their 9-5, head home, and then do it all over again the next day. There’s nothing wrong with simply having a job. You need a job for food, clothes, shelter, etc. But if you’re someone that is looking for something more , and you’re stuck in a 9-5 rut, then you’re probably not happy with just having a job. You’ve probably noticed videos all over your social media showcasing successful people talking about their passion and how that connects to their success. For instance, successful people like Warren Buffet believe that the key to success is finding your passion. And while that may sound cliche and cheesy, we should remember that these people get up every morning, excited for the day. They look at every day as a new opportunity to affect thousands of people through their work. Clearly, these people are onto something. Here is what they understand that the average person doesn’t.
